Carotenoid Biosynthesis and their Regulation in Citrus Fruits
نویسندگان
چکیده
Carotenoids are the main pigments responsible for the attractive color of the peel and pulp of citrus fruits and greatly contribute to their nutritional and antioxidant value. Fruits of different Citrus species display a broad array of color singularities and in many cultivars the peel and the pulp also exhibit different color, envisaging specieand tissuespecific regulation of the carotenoid content and composition. In addition, citrus mutants affected in fruit color are a useful experimental system to identify molecular mechanisms regulating carotenoid biosynthesis. Citrus is, therefore, an excellent model to study fruit carotenoid accumulation and their regulation. In this review, we summarize and update information on carotenoid content and composition in fruits of agronomically important Citrus species. Current understanding of carotenoids biosynthesis in citrus, highlighting the main regulatory steps of the pathway and how may be related to carotenoid content and complement in peel and pulp of Citrus fruits are discussed. Finally, the effect of environmental and endogenous factors on citrus fruits carotenoids is also evaluated. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Allelic diversity of phytoene synthase gene influences the transcription level in citrus fruit among a citrus F1 hybrid population
Phytoene synthase (PSY) is one of the key regulatory enzyme on the biosynthesis and accumulation of carotenoid in citrus fruits. The transcriptional diversity of PSY is mainly attributed to the structural variation in promoter region among PSY alleles. In aim to clarify how this transcriptional diversity is regulated among them, PSY alleles responsible for carotenoid biosynthesis in the fruits ...
متن کاملA novel carotenoid cleavage activity involved in the biosynthesis of Citrus fruit-specific apocarotenoid pigments
Citrus is the first tree crop in terms of fruit production. The colour of Citrus fruit is one of the main quality attributes, caused by the accumulation of carotenoids and their derivative C30 apocarotenoids, mainly β-citraurin (3-hydroxy-β-apo-8'-carotenal), which provide an attractive orange-reddish tint to the peel of oranges and Mandarins. Though carotenoid biosynthesis and its regulation h...
متن کاملThe Characteristics of Carotenoid Biosynthesis in Citrus Fruit
To learn how to regulate carotenoid content in citrus fruit, we studied the mechanism of carotenoid accumulation using physiological and genetic methods. Based on differences in the carotenoid profiles of flavedo and juice sacs, citrus species could be roughly divided into three groups: carotenoidpoor, violaxanthin-abundant, and b-cryptoxanthin-abundant groups. A comparison of the gene expressi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Rootstocks on the Sugars, Acids, Carotenoids, Chlorophylls and Ethylene of Clementine Mandarin (Citrus clementina)
Investigations have demonstrated that ratio of sugars to organic acids affects the particular taste of citrus fruit and carotenoids are essential for prevent of the disease. It seems that some rootstocks enhance the ripening of fruits and stimulatethe biosynthesis of sugars and carotenoids. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rootstocks on sugars, organic acids andcarotenoids o...

Studies have demonstrated that phenolic compounds andcarotenoids are essential for prevention of diseases. On the other hand, endogenous ethylene enhances the ripening of fruits and stimulatesthe biosynthesis of carotenoids as well as chlorophylls destruction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rootstocks on phenolic compounds andcarotenoids. The contents of individual phenolic...
